New Course Offerings for 2012!


Introduction to Fused Glass Jewelry with Dichroic Glass

Have fun exploring the possibilities of fused and dichroic glass for making jewelry. The course will cover safety issues, basic cutting, compatability, design elements and finishing. Emphasis on learning sound methods/techniques for creative expression & exploration. Students will complete a series of finished jewelry pieces.

Start Date: Tuesday, January 17, 2012 (runs through February 21st)
6 sessions from 2 - 4 pm
Fees: $140 (tools and firing fee included)
Materials fee for glass and findings not included

About the Instructor: Lynn Mikami was born in the Heart Mountain, Wyoming Relocation Center and raised in the South Bay. She completed her undergraduate work at UCLA and after working 2 years in Korea in 8 years in Germany retured to attend USC for her Certification as an Occupational Therapist. Fine Arts and Crafts have always been a part of her life both at work and play. Currently her particular areas of interest are fused glass, collage, and mixed media.

Creative Writing Workshop

The Creative Writing Workshop is for fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, memoir and essay writers. Based on the Amherst Writers & Artist method, which is designed to help "beat the block and banish the fear," new writers will leave encouraged; experienced writers will leave energized. Each week we will expand our creativity through prompts and exercises. We will also discuss how to write dialogue, structure, character development, elements of the personal narrative, and more.

Start Date: Friday, February 3rd, 2012 (runs through March 16th)
6 sessions from 7 - 9 pm, meets fridays
Fees: $120
Workshops are semester based, no drop-ins!

About the Instructor: Desiree Kannel is an AWA Affiliate, certified to lead workshops in the AWA method as described in Writing Alone & With Others by Pat Schneider, Oxford University Press. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University, and has also studied writing at Cerritos College, California State University Dominquez Hills, and through the Gotham Writers' Workshop. She has studied writing with Alma Luz Villanueva, Susan Taylor Chehak, Tananarive Due, and Leonard Chang. Desiree also holds a teaching credential from Cal State Long Beach. She has served as the fiction editor for The Sylvan Echo, an online literary journal. In 2007, she produced and edited a literary journal, Under the Structure.
Her work has appeared online, and she is currently in the final phases of her novel, Lucky John.
